Khuzestan, Iran -- Karoon Petrochemical Co, an Iranian isocyanate specialist, produced 1200 tonnes of TDI (toluene diisocyanate) during February and March 2010 -- becoming the first isocyanate producer in the Middle East, with a nominal capacity of 40 kilotonnes per annum (ktpa), the company claimed in an 11 April statement.
According to the company's website, Karoon has an MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) capacity of 40 ktpa, making total isocyanate production around 80 ktpa.
Karoon said its TDI, which is produced at the company's production facility in the Petrochemical Special Economic Zone in the south west of Iran, has a quality of at least 99.9 percent, compared to a "default quality" of 99.5 percent.
The Iranian company also produced 2 kt of HCL (hydrogen chloride) and 1.3 kt of NaOCL (sodium hypochlorite) at its production plant during the same period, the statement added. (RD)
