By Patrick Raleigh, UT On-line news editorMurnau, Germany-Krauss-Maffei Kunststofftechnik GmbH has developed a combined injection /reaction moulding technology to produce two-component thermoplastics and PU parts. The "one-shot" moulding system, it claims, is a world first and provides parts with better surface reproducibility, touch and feel than previously possible. The technology will feature at K2004 in Dusseldorf, Germany, where K-M will show the manufacture of a PU-covered polyamide seat-belt buckle lock on a KM 160-750 CX injection moulding machine linked to a PUR-mixing/metering unit. "The target is to have a one-shot process, which we will have," said Walter Tesche, managing director of K-M's Reaction Technology division. "PU is very low viscosity, so it is certainly an interesting point to make the mould in accordance with the requirements needed to process PU, but you will see it it can be done,' he promised. According to Tesche, "You can create completely new surfaces and the touch and feel of these surfaces is excellent, and reproducibility is excellent and, so far, you cannot achieve this with thermoplastic machines," said Tesche, speaking at a 17 June press conference in Murnau.
