Munich, Germany - The CoverForm process, a joint development by KraussMaffei and Evonik Industries, has won the "Best of" award in the Surface and Technology category at the Materialica trade show in Munich, held in October.
CoverForm is a surface-coating process where a thin, functional coating is applied to a moulded PMMA (poly methyl methacrylate) part as part of the injection moulding process, "rather than in a separate, post-mould process," a 3 Nov KraussMaffei statement said, adding that this cuts unit manufacturing costs.
In the CoverForm process, the special PMMA is injected and compression moulded. The part cools in the mould and the cavity is enlarged, creating a space for the surface coating, the statement said. The gap produced is then flooded with a liquid reactive system - the surface coating - and the mould performs another compression stroke. The reactive system is produced in a KraussMaffei reaction machine docked on to the injection mould, the company added.
The only post-mould process is UV curing which takes place immediately after demoulding, KraussMaffei said, adding that potential applications include display windows for mobile phones and vehicle dashboard instruments. (RD)
