Markt Bibart, Germany – Maezio is the new brand name for continuous fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites (CFRTP) from Covestro.
The strong and light materials are being developed to contribute to energy efficiency in various sectors.
The materials are based on continuous carbon or glass fibres, impregnated with thermoplastic polyurethane, polycarbonate or other thermoplastic resins.
These components are used to produce uni-directional reinforced tapes and sheets at Covestro’s Markt Bibart, facility. They can be thermoformed with existing thermoforming tools.
Covestro says the materials are already attracting attention in manufacturers of electrical and electronic goods, household appliances, furniture, luggage, shoes and sporting goods and medical technology, and the automotive industry.
Haier has already launched a state-of-the-art air conditioner that uses Maezio for the main housing, and Chinese athletic wear startup Bmai is using it to make marathon shoes.
