Chengdu, China – A group at the Chinese Academy of Sciences has used a melt polycondensation process to synthesise poly(ether carbonate) polyurethane elastomers (PECUEs). The aim was to make a thermoplastic PU elastomer with good thermal and mechanical properties.
The elastomers they made had mixed soft segments. The chemists described the melt polycondensation process as simple, non-toxic and non-polluting, and claim this is the first time PECUEs have been made in this way.
Thermal and tensile tests showed the elastomers had good elasticity and mechanical properties at low temperature. They speculate that they should have potential in industrial applications.
The work has been published in the journal Chemical Papers.
