Barcelona, Spain - Merquinsa announced 21 Jan 20009 that it has gained a Frost & Sullivan 2008 Green Excellence of the Year Award for its product innovation in thermoplastic urethane (TPU).
This award recognises Merquinsa´s bio-based TPU, made using natural oil polyols, a renewable carbon resource, and marketed under the Pearlthane and Pearlbond ECO brand names for a wide range of applications in electronics, sports, automotive, footwear and adhesives.
Bio TPUs are high-performance polymers with a bio-content from 20 to 90 percent according to ASTM D6866, and offer a unique set of properties, such as low density, high flexibility, abrasion resistance, good toughness and processability, said Merquinsa. These bio-TPUs are "fully recyclable but not biodegradable," the company added.
A preliminary life cycle assessment (LCA) indicates that manufacturing these product lines result in 40% less global warming emissions.
Frost & Sullivan presents these awards annually to companies that have demonstrated leadership towards implementing sustainable and environmentally conscious initiatives. Recipient companies have demonstrated a commitment to a low-carbon society.
