Cincinnati, Ohio - Coatings additives supplier Michelman Inc. said 15 June that it hasbought Raleigh, North Carolina-based Hydrosize Technologies Inc., a deal which ads a waterborne polyurethane sizing to Michelman's portfolio.
Hydrosize makes coatings including sizings, film formers, fixatives and binders, as well as resins for the coating and composite industries.
The company's waterborne polyurethane sizing technology is "designed specifically for the fibres and composites market, said Michelman, and will complement Michelman's existing polyolefin-based solutions. Cincinnati-based Michelman said it will develop this PU range for use in other markets including coatings and packaging.
Hydrosize also has its own polyolefin line, "which will strengthen and supplement Michelman's existing offering," said Michelman.
A unique product from Hydrosize- co-owned by husband and wife, Andy and Heather Brink - is the only solvent-free, high-temperature sizing for use in advanced composites, claimed Michelman.
Andy Brink has joined Michelman as business development manager, Fibers & Composites.
"Michelman's strong global presence will be a great benefit to Hydrosize customers. It will allow us to support their worldwide growth initiatives with experienced and knowledgeable staff, as well as a developed infrastructure," Brink commented, in the statement.
"Hydrosize is a perfect fit for our company. Their strengths lie in the fibres and composites market, one of our fastest growing business units. The Brinks have developed a strong and truly unique product offering that will help us answer the increasingly demanding needs of our global markets," said Steve Shifman, president and ceo at Michelman, in the announcement.
Marty Riehemann, vice president, Chemical Specialties for Michelman, went on to say "Dr Brink has no equal when it comes to sizing chemistry as it applies to the fibre/plastic interface, and we look forward to developing and offering those capabilities to our customers."
As well as coatings additives, Michelman also makes additives and modifiers for fibres and composites, inks, and construction products. The company also offers performance-enhancing barrier, functional, and decorative coatings for flexible film packaging, paperboard, and corrugated boxes.
