Tokyo, Japan – Mitsui Chemicals is to increase capacity for its Takelac polyurethane dispersions. The expansion is designed to meet growing demand for mono-material food packaging.
Capacity for the PU resins will be doubled at its factory in Shimizu. Construction is set to begin in February 2024, and the new capacity is expected to come on line in June 2025.
The company says the water-based Takelac resins offer excellent heat resistance, high temperature gas barrier performance, and fastness to rubbing. They are used in a variety of applications including coatings, adhesives, binders and resin modifiers.
Demand for the resins has spiked in recent years as they can be used as barrier coatings on mono-material food packaging. The use of this form of packaging has been growing significantly, particularly in Europe, as it is easier to recycle. Mitsui Chemicals says it is now increasing capacity in anticipation of further growth in demand.
