Wilton, Connecticut - Momentive Performance Materials launched what it calls two innovative family of Niax silicone surfactants 24 Sept in Orlando, Florida. One line, Momentive says, may be cost-effective in low-density foam formulations for important applications such as footwear and automotive. The other material is suitable for formulation into resin blends for the manufacture of rigid polyurethane foams.
Niax silicones L-1501, L-1502, L-1503 and L-1504 are "cell regulators" that may be useful in a variety of polyurethane systems and across a wide range of microcellular foam densities, the company said, generally providing improved performance over the current industry standard, These new materials are "shear stabilisers" to be considered for use with the Niax cell regulators in ester, ether or mixed ester/ether systems.
"This new family of Niax silicones provides manufacturers with the best of both worlds - options for outstanding value and high performance," said Alberto Melle, global marketing manager, Momentive. "Through the use of oubr new line of surfactants, in conjunction with our new generation cell-opening Niax catalysts, customers may achieve outstanding end product performance without sacrificing cost efficiencies."
Momentive's other new product, Niax silicone surfactant Y-16045, is a non-hydrolysable silicone copolymer, suitable for formulation into resin blends to make rigid polyurethane foams. This product is "an excellent candidate to consider for use in the manufacture of flexible metal-faced laminated boardstock, rigid metal-faced boardstock and bunstock blown with hydrocarbons," Momentive said, since it has the potential to substantially increase emulsion stability when the resin components are blended into a system.
Melle described this other new surfactant as "an excellent candidate for applications containing low compatibility or low solubility blowing agents. …In addition to extended resin emulsion duration, it can provide … excellent foam stabilisation and an extremely fine cell structure," in rigid PU foams.
