Woodside, New York-Axel Plastics Research Laboratories marks its 65th year of supplying the plastics and rubber industry worldwide with proprietary mould releases and process aid additives, according to a 19 Jan announcement from the company.
"Our company was there at the birth of the plastics industry and we are proud that today, we remain at the forefront of the mould release and process aid additive business," said Frank Axel, the company's president, speaking at a recent anniversary event.
The Woodside-based manufacturer is family owned and operated. It was set up in 1941 by Hungarian-born Dr Rodolphe Aczél. who emigrated from Belgium to the US in 1939.
The mould-release business grew out of the non-stick coatings Axel developed to preserve his laboratory glassware-"part of the wartime effort to conserve technical glass that was hard to obtain," according to the statement,.
Today, Axel supplies customers in over 55 countries. For moulding polyurethane resins, the company supplies mould release materials suitable for uses including reaction injection moulding, long fibre injection and pultrusion.
Current president, Frank Axel, joined in 1970, adding many new products including both release coatings and additives for thermoset and thermoplastic resins and rubber under the name MoldWiz.
In 1990, Axel added a new brand of solvent and water-based semi-permanent mould releases marketed under the tradename Xtend.
