Virginia, US – Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) has accepted the Mattress Recycling Council’s proposed mattress recycling programme at the third time of asking. The modified operating plan that was approved includes a budget and stewardship assessment to fund the programme.
Retailers, manufacturers, importers, distributors and renovators of both mattresses and foundations sold for use within the state will have to register their business with MRC. All businesses selling mattresses to end-users, whether individual consumers of large-volume buyers, will have to collect a $22.50/unit fee, with this sum itemised on the receipt.
MRC will now implement a state-wide network to collect and recycle discarded within the state ahead of the programme’s launch on 1 January 2025. It will become the fourth state with a MRC mattress recycling programme, joining California, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
