Farmington, Connecticut -- Otis Elevator Co. will provide 40 of its Gen2 energy-efficient elevators to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which reduce energy consumption by up to 50 percent compared to conventional systems, Otis claimed in a 10 Aug company statement.

The Gen2 system uses Otis' patented flat, polyurethane-coated steel belts and a permanent-magnet gearless machine and does not require any additional lubrication, making it cleaner for the environment, the statement said.

Overall, Otis, a unit of United Technologies Corp., will supply 88 energy-efficient elevators, escalators and moving walkways to LAX.

"Our advanced technology will be integral in providing safe and reliable transportation solutions to the airport's millions of travellers each year," said Otis president Didier Michaud-Daniel.

"We are proud to apply our extensive expertise and experience with large-scale infrastructure projects while delivering the solutions and high-quality products required to meet the needs of this prominent transportation centre," said Randy Wilcox, president, Otis North and South America Area.
