Washington DC, US – New York’s State Senate and Assembly have advanced their proposed mattress recycling legislation, despite serious concerns raised by the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) about their provisions. ISPA said both bills are moving much earlier and faster than anticipated.
Neither bill includes a provision for a point-of-sale fee on mattresses, which ISPA believes is the simplest, most equitable way to fund state mattress recycling programmes. Instead, the bills place the costs solely on manufacturers. The legislation would also mandate impractical, costly collection criteria, and ban advanced recycling technologies.
“We need to continue the pressure on these bills, to ensure that this flawed, harmful legislation does not become law in New York,” ISPA said. The association thanked members and supply chain partners in the state who reached out to their representatives, and called on all companies in the sector with a presence in New York to contact its government affairs team to find out how they can help.
