Chattanooga, Tennessee-Firefighters saved a large part of the factory at Chattanooga-based flexible foam maker Nu Foam Products during a fire on the morning of 30 Oct.
A captain with the local firefighting department spotted the fire early and called it in. Eventually six fire companies attended the scene, according to a report in TheChattanoogan.com.
Based on eyewitness accounts, said the report, a static spark ignited some polyurethane foam, and the flames spread rapidly throughout the large machinery.
Nu Foam, part of the Flexible Foam Products Inc. of Spencerville, Ohio, makes foam for the mattress, furniture and carpet backing sectors. Flexible Foam itself is part of of the plastics division of Ohio Decorative Products.
Flexible Foam expanded this year by adding two former Vitafoam Inc. plants in the southern states-in High Point, North Carolina, and Tupelo, Mississippi.
These buys were part of continued expansion for Flexible Foam, which took over the Nu Foam fabrication plant in November 2005. In April 2005, the company also opened a facility in Longview, Washington.
