Looking at the largest markets, in Germany sales were down 3.6% in October, with registrations at 274,303 units. This kept the year-to-date figures in negative territory. Sales thus far in 2020 are down 23.4%.
UK sales were down 31% year on year. A total of 140.900 cars were sold in the month.
In France, the number of registrations fell by 26.9% year on year, with a total of 1.3m units sold in the first 10 months of 2020. Spanish sales were down by 21% in the month, at 74,200 units.
Sales in Italy were almost unchanged, with a fall of 0.2% giving a total of 157,000 units in October. A total of 1.12m vehicles have been sold there in the year to date.
However, sales were up in three of the smallest European markets. In Norway, 12,900 vehicles were sold in the month, up 23.6% on October 2019. In Ireland, a 6.2% increase in sales took the October 2020 total to 2315 vehicles, while Greece managed a 3.5% increase in sales.
