Fresno, California – Pleasant Mattress has become the first US-based mattress maker to gain Sleep Products Sustainability Programme (SP2) certification from the Mattress Recycling Council (MRC). It was awarded after an independent audit.
The voluntary SP2 programme is being piloted in California. Its aim is to empower mattress manufacturers with tools, training and resources to implement sustainable practices throughout the business.
Manufacturers will measure the negative environmental impacts of their operations and supply chains, and systematically reduce them. Since starting the programme, Pleasant has reduced its energy use by 10%, and has managed a similar cut to the waste it generates.
Future goals for improvement have also been identified, including installing LED lighting and adding rooftop solar power for its sewing and manufacturing equipment.
‘It was easy to get our whole company on board from the start,’ said Rion Morgenstern, the company’s president and CEO. ‘Every day our employees hear about the urgent need for sustainability from their children who are learning about it in school. The certification reinforces Pleasant Mattress’ dedication to environmental sustainability and our community.’
