Dubai UAE — Polyurea coatings are playing an important role in new Dubai parks and resorts which opened in October 2016, VIP Coating Solutions said recently.
The coatings are widely used at Motion Gate Dubai, Bollywood Parks Dubai, Legoland Dubai and the Legoland Waterpark. In the Legoland Parks a fast application, long lasting, waterproofing solution was required, said Christian Wilde, at VIP.
In these projects over 22,000 m² of concrete were covered using the polyurea coating systems, he said.
There were eight such projects in total, including: a jet ski pool of 1800 m²; undersea adventure pool, 2500 m²; 6000 m² of aluminium roof sandwich panels; mini land indoor Lego structures, 600 m²; 4000 m² at the wave pool; the lazy river pool, 3000 m²; underground surge, turbine and potable water tanks, 2000 m² and finally, the La Pita hotel with lazy river 2000 m², said Wilde.
VIP coating said its materials were used to ensure water tightness and longevity, however this was "no ordinary lining project", and the project “presented some unique challenges.”
Although the project consisted of mainly new concrete substrates it also included timber, composite wood, PVC, steel and iron substrates. Operating conditions range from saltwater through to desalinated water and potable drinking water, VIP Coatings added.
Additionally, some coated areas are in direct sunlight and some in constant submersion; others would face hydraulic forces and abrasion, the firm said. In total VIP said it used four different joint sealing products, two different concrete repair and preparation products, two different primers, three different productive lining systems and two different topcoats to best accommodate the various substrates and final operating environments.
During the preparation and application processes external temperatures reached 52°C (126°F) with humidity levels up to 85%.
In use, some substrate temperatures reach 68°C (154°F) and the worksite was subject to blowing sand. This meant that every morning substrates had to be cleaned to ensure the they were suitable for coating, the company said.
