Riesending, Germany -- A polyurethane helmet protected trapped Johann Westhauser’s head as he emerged from one of Germany’s deepest caves, according to the American Chemistry Council’s bloggers celebrating the material’s 75th year.
Westhauser was trapped more than 1,000 meters deep for 11 days.
The blog posting at www.polyurethanes.org said: “Polyurethane is in fact found in a wide range of safety equipment, including safety helmets and safety goggles.
"In helmets, it is generally the foam padding which is vital to protect your head from shock,” it added.
