By Liz White, UT staffClifton, New Jersey-The 'Denim Destroyer' made by Polysoft Products is a novel way of producing antique-looking denim in an instant. It consists of a flexible, polyurethane foam block with a thermo-bonded micro-abrasive coating. When rubbed along the grain of any denim product, the coating abrades the surface and "gives the material an authentic vintage appearance in less than three minutes," claims Polysoft. In addition the process also softens the material, exposing the whiter core of the fibres. "This effect is unique" Polysoft claims, "because it is identical to that which naturally occurs, over many years, through everyday wear and tear." Polysoft explains that designer vintage jeans are only available in model sizes at very high prices, citing vintage jeans in Denim Doctor, a small denim boutique in Los Angeles, California which retail for over $300. "The Denim Destroyer will put an end to that fashion snobbery," the firm claims. It points out that in tests, 32 fashion-minded individuals in Lower Manhattan "could not differentiate between a pair of jeans purchased for $15 at Wal-Mart and rubbed with the Denim Destroyer, and a pair $200 vintage jeans purchased in one of New York City's most exclusive vintage boutiques."Polysoft Products develops and manufactures new abrasive and non-abrasive coatings for a wide variety of industrial and DIY applications."
