Shanghai, China – Covestro has collaborated with Tier 1 automotive supplier Liyang Shanhu Industrial to create a novel battery cover. The Baypreg STM PU battery cover is being shown at the China Composites Expo in Shanghai.
Baypreg STM uses the spray-transfer-moulding process. PU resins are sprayed onto glass fibres before being moulded into battery covers. This, they said, enables the efficient production of composite components in a process that is also cost-effective.
The PU material reduces battery weight by more than half compared to traditional steel shell materials. As it is non-metallic, it has inherent anti-corrosion and insulation properties, effectively preventing electric arcing. Its high strength also means it meets tough OEM requirements.
“The Baypreg STM solution showcases Covestro’s ability to deeply understand evolving market needs and rapidly innovate cutting-edge material solutions,” said Akhil Singhania, Covestro’s global head of PU specialties for tailored urethanes. “Our goal is to deliver lighter, more efficient and sustainable solutions through continuous technological innovation.”
