Alexandria, Virginia – The Mattress Recycling Council’s Bye Bye Mattress programme has now recycled more than three million mattresses in California since it was set up in 2016.
‘Reaching this milestone in less than three years of operation is a significant achievement,’ said MRC’s Managing Director Mike O’Donnell. ‘We share the programme’s success with our dedicated contractors and participating collection sites across California. We also have continued support from elected officials that voted for this law in 2013.’
The programme is supported by a recycling fee that is collected when consumers buy mattresses and box springs in California. It pays for free drop-off locations and collection events throughout the state. The mattresses are then taken to regional recycling companies.
It also recycles mattresses from hotels, universities and retailers who discard large numbers of mattresses.
