Madrid – Spanish polyol-to-petrochemicals producer Repsol has taken a stake in Enerkem, a partner in the Ecoplanta Molecular Solutions waste recovery project in Tarragona, Spain.
Repsol is investing EUR54m to buy shares directly, and a further EUR68m in bonds that can be converted to shares in the future. Enerkem is privately held by investors, including the National Bank of Canada and BlackRock
The Ecoplanta site converts solid municipal waste into methanol for further processing. The site is designed to help Spain reduce its CO2 emissions by 200kT/year. Enerkem owns the gasification technology used at the site, which should be in operation by 2025.
