Detroit, Michigan – A total of 1.59m light vehicles were sold in the US in May, up 43% on the same month in 2020.
LMC Automotive, which supplied the data, said: 'As has been the case since the market stared to recover last year, retail sales led the charge. [These] totalled 1.41m units.'
This is the highest monthly sales figure since December 2016, LMC added. Sales could have been even higher in what is usually a strong month, but a lack of inventory held the numbers down.
Augusto Amorim, senior manager for America vehicles sales forecasts at LMC, said: 'There was a marked impact on sale from the part shortages that have been disrupting production.'
