Roydon, Kings Lynn -- Specialist UK formulation house IFS Chemicals is supplying polyurethane material for Astucia of Bicester in Oxforshire, to use in making innovative solar-powered road studs. IFS said these studs, "are set to revolutionise night driving for millions of motorists worldwide."
Percy Shaw invented the original cat's eye more than 70 years ago, transforming the safety of road networks.
Now Astucia, a leading developer of systems for road and traffic safety, has introduced these solar powered, LED 'intelligent' road studs. Compared with existing cat's eyes and road studs, these provide "up to a ten-fold increase in visibility and better durability in the most demanding of conditions," said IFS.
IFS Chemicals said it regularly works with companies to devise formulations for specific purposes, as it did in this case. It now supplies the ingredients which Astucia uses in moulding these new road studs.
These devices allow "drivers to see their route for up to a kilometre ahead, even in reduced visibility caused by fog or surface spray. I am confident that these new studs will play a major role in improving road safety both at home and abroad," said Dr Barrie Colvin, managing director of IFS Chemicals, in an 18 July announcement.
