Shanghai, China -- Shanghai Chemical Industry Park Industrial Gases Company (SCIPIG), a 50-50 joint venture between Praxair Inc. and Air Liquide, has gained a 15-year gas contract from Bayer Polyurethanes (Shanghai) Co. Ltd (BPUS).
A ceremony for signing the agreement on hydrogen and carbon monoxide (HYCO) supply was held in Shanghai, 17 Dec 2009.
Under the contract, SCIPIG is to develop its existing industrial gas network and build a new HYCO plant, including a steam methane reforming unit and a carbon monoxide unit. The plant will have a total capacity of about 130 kilotonnes per year and is expected to start-up at the beginning of 2012.
Formerly, SCIPIG supplied oxygen and nitrogen to various users at the Bayer Integrated Site Shanghai at Caojing.
SCIPIG, a JV between two leading global suppliers of industrial gases, was set up in late 2001, with a capacity of over 200,000 cu.m/h of industrial gases. SCIPIG has major contracts with companies including Huntsman Polyurethane Shanghai Ltd (HPS), Shanghai Chlor-Alkali Chemical Co. Ltd (SCAC), Shanghai Lianheng Isocyanate Co. Ltd (SLIC), Shanghai BASF Polyurethane Co. Ltd (SBPC), Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemicals Co. Ltd (SSMC), Evonik Degussa Specialty Chemicals (Shanghai) Co. Ltd and more.
Bayer Material Science's Caojing site houses a 350 kilotonnes per annum MDI (metheylene diphenyl diisocyanate) plant, and a 250 ktpa TDI (toluene diisocyanate) facility is also being built there. The site also has an MDI splitter amongst other facilities. The TDI plant, scheduled to come on stream in 2010, will use BMS's innovative gas-phase phosgenation process.
