Ambert, France – Textile and rubber firm Joubert Productions is selling snow chains made from BASF thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU).
In what BASF claims as a world first, the firm’s Elastollan TPU has replaced the traditional metal used to make the vehicle tyre covers.
According to BASF, the Elastollan versions are abrasion resistant, flexible at low temperatures, as well as resistant to loose chippings and road salt.
The product meets the Europe-wide ONORM 5117 standard, meaning the snow chains must remain in contact with the road surface regardless of wheel position. They also come in different sizes.
Two Elastollan grades of different colours are injection-moulded to create the product. The black grade (B90A15) is harder setting while the red grade (B60A10WH) is more flexible and easy flowing. In compact injection moulding, the black chain links are overmoulded with the red in one mould where they weld together.
