Ulsan, Korea – Songwon has set up a shipping partnership with Etihad Rail, the national rail operator in the UAE. Songwon Polysys Additives is shipping products from its plant in the Khalifa Industrial Zone in Abu Dhabi (Kizad) to a major customer in Al Ruwais Industrial City, 240km to the west.
Each train trip can take up to 300 trucks off the road, according to Etihad Rail. The result is reduced CO2 emissions, and cutting transportation and road maintenance costs.
Etihad Rail was launched in 2009 with the aim of improving the country’s transport infrastructure. It links the seven emirates with neighbouring Gulf Cooperation Council countries. The first stage of the project was completed in 2016, while an extension across the UAE via Abu Dhabi to the Saudi Arabian border was finished in early 2023. The network is expected to cut about 8.2MT of CO2 emissions a year, a 21% reduction.
“We are proud to be the first company to use the state-of-the-art rail network for shipments from Kizad,” said Christian Miglioli, country manager for the UAE at Songwon. “The rail network offers us an efficient, secure solution for our freight needs while ensuring fast door-to-door delivery to our key customers in the region.”
