Florida, US -- SoyThane Technologies Inc. has developed ExpandoThane -- a new foaming polyurea for the roofing and waterproofing industries, a 10 Feb company statement said.
When creating ExpandoThane, said Tom Hay -- technical advisor for SoyThane, "We decided to formulate it to improve on two flaws we saw with today's polyurea."
The first, he continued, was that polyurea, as a general rule, depends on a primer for adhesion. This can be a costly and time-consuming step leaving contractors with too short a window of opportunity to apply the polyurea without having to reprime, Hay said, adding that SoyThane also saw that primers could cause blisters if the polyurea is applied too soon. The second flaw was that polyurea cannot usually fill pin or bug holes, so the company set out to develop a polyurea that expanded like urethane foam.
"ExpandoThane to date gets a tenacious bite to modified bitumen, urethane foam, polystyrene, metal and concrete," Hay added.
After a series of formulations and tests, Hay said the company has developed a polyurea that can expand 5-7 times its volume and pass a hailstone weather test.
"Our main targeted markets at this time are over metal, modified bitumen and spray urethane foam," Hay added. (RD)
