South Shields, UK - Intelligent Engineering's SPS technology has been applied to restore a walkway on the Northern Producer, an Aker H-3 Semi Submersible type Floating Production Facility, by Mcnulty Offshore Construction.
The Sandwich Plate System uses a solid polyurethane elastomer core, which binds two steel plates together, forming a composite. When SPS is used as a repair, an original steel plate of the structure is used as one side of the sandwich, a new plate is added above, and polyurethane elastomer is injected into the gap between the two. This is called SPS Overlay.
"For our application a conventional crop and replace repair would not have been possible due to knock-on implications," said Greg Ritchie of Petrofac Facilities Management, operator of the Northern Producer. "SPS Overlay is a quicker, easier solution for deck repairs and when finished they are better than new," he added.
Intelligent Engineering said the ongoing demand for energy has led to a boom in the offshore oil and gas industry, in turn increasing the need to keep vessels like the Northern Producer functioning properly. SPS Overlay director Rob Duffin explained, "minimising downtime is critical and the beauty of SPS Overlay is that it works anywhere; its speed and simplicity raises the productivity of all shipyards and repair facilities."
