Colombo -- Sri Lankan conglomerate Hayleys has entered the PU mattress business. The company has invested LKR 225m ($1.24 m) in the factory located in Dankotuwa.
The site is about about 48km (30 miles ) North of Colombo. It ' has German machinery and likely to manufacture 30,000 PU mattresses each month,' said the company. The site will be run by Hayleys' subsidiary, Creative Polymats. It is likely to be operational by the end of 2019.
Estimates put the market for mattresses in Sri Lanka’s at over 1.6m units/year. About 80% are foam mattresses, coir accounts for 11% and spring mattresses 3%.
Hayleys already makes coir and spring mattresses through its subsidiary Hayleys Fibre. This business has five facilities in Sri Lanka and one in India.
