Northfield, Illnois -- Stepan Europe SAS has bought Polish polyester polyol producer Alfa Systems Sp zoo from its shareholders, Chemitex Holding Ltd and Chemovil Holdings Ltd.
Stepan Co.' 16 July announcement said the deal includes Alfa Systems' new plant in Brzeg Dolny, just outside Wroclaw, with 25-kilotonnes-per-annum capacity for polyester polyols and 15 ktpa capacity for polyurethane systems.
The plant started up in mid-2009 and specialises in the manufacture of aromatic polyester polyols from recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as a raw material. Neither side revealed financial details of the transaction.
"Polyester polyols are the critical component of our polymer business. The acquisition of Alfa Systems gives us manufacturing capability in Eastern Europe and the ability to economically and effectively serve customers in Central and Eastern Europe," said Quinn Stepan Jr, president and ceo of Stepan Co., the US parent of Stepan Europe.
Quinn Stepan also noted that, "The technology to manufacture aromatic polyester polyols from recycled raw materials is new for Stepan," and said Stepan is "excited to add this site with its technology to our global polyester polyol manufacturing network." This includes sites in Millsdale, Illinois; Wesseling, Germany; and a joint venture in Nanjing, China.
Stepan Co., headquartered in Northfield, Illinois, produces speciality and intermediate chemicals used in household, industrial, personal care, agricultural, food and insulation related products.
