Everberg, Belgium - A thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) from Huntsman has been used by hose maker Papurex W. Büchner GmbH to develop AgrarPur - a new pneumatic tubing system for the agricultural sector.
Based on Huntsman Polyurethanes' proprietary Irogran TPU, AgrarPur hoses are designed to carry compressed air to power specialist harvesting and pruning equipment.
Such machinery is used widely in wine or fruit growing, and in forestry and professional horticulture in America, the Middle East, Europe and Australia. The range includes vibrating rakes - used to knock fruit and nuts like olives and pistachios off trees - and pneumatic powered shears, secateurs and chain saws for cutting back and trimming branches.
With Irogran, the AgrarPur hoses are up to 15 percent stronger under pressure than conventional PU hoses. They can tolerate pressures of more than 40 bars and have a standard working limit of 16 bars. Irogran also makes it possible for Papurex to make hoses that are up to 10 percent longer, enabling farmers to harvest much larger areas at any one time.
Papurex has 25 years experience in the farming sector, producing 26 million metres of PU tubing every year.
Andreas Geyer, financial and commercial manager at Papurex explains: "As well as supplying Irogran - a superior TPU in terms of product quality, performance and end-user benefits - the overall experience of working with Huntsman was exceptional."
Huntsman "responded rapidly to our needs, quickly understood our aims and worked closely with us to engineer a solution that would meet our technical specification."
Irogran is a range of robust, plasticiser-free TPUs, imparting the appropriate attributes: high elongation; abrasion and UV resistance; intrinsic flexibility; plus excellent physical recovery and good temperature performance, even under extremely hot conditions - a must in crop fields in warm climates, said Huntsman.
