Fort Wayne, Indiana -- Trelleborg Sealing Solutions said 16 March that it has developed a proprietary polyurethane compound: Zurcon Z25. According to Treleborg, this new formulation, "offers excellent viscoelasticity and high tensile strength at extreme temperatures."
It also demonstrates all the characteristics of another Trelleborg grade which the company says is an industry leader -- Zurcon grade Z20, but with an elevated operating temperature up to +130°C (+270°F).
The company recommends Zurcon Z25 for all hydraulic uses where high-temperature performance is required, as it has improved extrusion resistance and compression set.
The material is ideal for use in heavy-duty cylinder-sealing, where it can guarantee a long service life, said Trelleborg's press release. Such uses include industrial and mobile applications with limited cooling systems, or cylinders exposed to high-temperature painting processes.
"Zurcon Z25 is a significant advancement in the field of polyurethane sealing technology," claims Joe Woods, fluid power segment manager for Trelleborg Sealing Solutions Americas. "It allows for the production of high-performance seals that can be commercially and technically competitive. This translates to better equipment performance for our customers."
Additionally, Trelleborg call the material self-energising, and says it operates at pressures up to 40MPa/ 5800psi without a back-up ring. It is suitable for use in all hydraulic fluids and has a low compression set. It is based on MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) and is suitable for rotary applications such as swivel joints, where heat is generated by high pressures and low speeds.
