Washington, DC – The new SRM cigarette is now available in the US. The Office of Compliance and Field Operations at the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued an interim enforcement policy for mattresses and mattress pads as a result.
The revision supersedes its previous policy of permitting the use of commercially available fire-standard cigarettes in tests to check for compliance with 16 CFR part 1632 – standard for the flammability of mattresses and mattress pads.
The previous policy that does not require a repeat test if a cigarette extinguishes before burning its full length is also superseded. However, mattress manufacturers and importers will still need to test only two mattress surfaces for newly developed mattress prototypes.
