Loudon, Tennessee – The Polyurethane Foam Association’s virtual Fall meeting was given an update on legislation that affects mattress recycling by Ryan Trainer, president of the US International Sleep Products Association and Mattress Recycling Council (MRC).
Online retailers selling mattresses to California now have to offer customers free collection of discarded mattresses. Brick-and-mortar stores have had to offer this since 2016, while online sales were previously exempt if they used common carriers to deliver the products.
MRC is hoping to start a pilot scheme in Maine in the next couple of years. ‘[The state] is remote with a lot of wide open spaces, so it is a challenge,’ Trainer said. ‘Transportation to the recycling centre and getting materials to the scrap market will be expensive.’ MRC is working with Goodwill and others, and will be applying for a state grant for the pilot programme. If successful, Maine may put a programme in with MRC, he said.
