Maastricht, the Netherlands -- A new and “unique” polyol allows for the manufacture of durable TPU parts for heavy duty applications like auto undercarriages and hydraulic seals, its developer outlined at UTECH Europe 2015.
Elevance uses oils including soy, palm, Jatropha, Canola, corn, tallow, algae and mustard and draws on Nobel prize-winning innovation in metathesis to create the new polyol, it was outlined in a presentation at the polyurethane exhibition.
Research scientist Allyson Beuhler told UTECH-polyurethane.com the product was designed for use in applications that need to survive in aggressive, high temperature and high humidity environments.
She said the TPUs created have a “hydrolytic stability comparable to polyethers” – which she outlined in her presentation entitled ‘polyurethanes from renewable long chain diacids’.
She said the polyol was developed over an 18-month period. She also said the long chain molecules naturally repel water.
