Kaluga, Russia -- BASF Coatings has started production in its new system partnership with Volkswagen in Kaluga, Russia, coating the first VW vehicle body with cathodic e-coat paints.
The coatings group opened a new production site in Pavlovski Posad, around 70 km east of Moscow, in mid 2008
Preparations for start up included a new paint line, installed by Stuttgart, Germany-based Duerr AG, which had to be thoroughly cleaned before it could be put into operation and filled with the electrocoat paint.
Volkswagen employees also had to be briefed on operating the paint line and familiarised with the details of the e-coating process.
This year, 10 000 vehicles are to be produced at Kaluga, with plans for production to be expanded to 150 000 units per year. Long-term plans call for the production volume to double in the following years starting in 2011 after the plant is expanded.
