Yantai, China – Wanhua Chemical has moved closer to achieving its goal of circularity, with a pilot plant for the recycling of rigid PU foam. The plant, which opened in July, will investigate the scalability of the rigid foam recycling technology Wanhua first announced at PU China in July 2021.
Through chemical recycling, waste rigid foam PU is used to make a highly compatibly repolyol, which can be used in the place of the original, virgin polyol. Wanhua says the process significantly reduces carbon emissions without compromising on properties and performance. The company suggests the process will be particular useful for dealing with waste PU foam from refrigerators.
Wanhua has already produced repolyol in the laboratory, from soft PU foam. It hopes to begin pilot production of repolyols from rigid PU foam in 2023.
