Oxford, UK – Coronavirus lockdowns hammered West European car registrations in March 2019. They were down by 52.9% at 770,000 units. compared with March 2020 , according to data from LMC Automotive.
In March 2019, a total of 1.64m units were registered.
Looking at the largest markets; in Germany sales were down 37.70% in March this year. Registrations were 215,000 units. This kept the year-to-date figures in negative territory. Sales so far are down 20.30% in 2020.
UK sales fell by 31.00% year on year, as the UK lockdown happened relatively later in the month. Sales hit a total of 255,000 cars in the month.
In France, the year on year number of registrations fell by 34.10% with a total of 400,000 units sold there in the year so far. Spanish sales were down by 69% in the month at 37,600 units.
Meanwhile, in Italy, where the lockdown was enforced earlier in the month, sales were down by 85%. A total of 28,300 units were sold in in March.
