Oxford, UK – The gradual return to normal from severe coronavirus lockdowns in West European saw car registrations rebound in May 2020. They were down by 57.3% at 557,000 units. compared with May 2019 , according to data from LMC Automotive.
This compares with the annual drop of 80% in April, during the height of the lockdowns.
Looking at the largest markets; in Germany sales were down 49.50% in May. Registrations were 168,148 units. Sales so far are down 35.00% in 2020.
UK sales were down 51.40% year on year. Sales hit a total of 20,200 cars in the month.
In France , the year on year number of registrations fell by 48.50% with a total of 500,000 units sold there in the year so far. Spanish sales were down by 73% in the month at 34,300 thousand units.
Meanwhile, in Italy sales were down by 50% reaching a total of 99,700 units in May. A total of 450,000 vehicles have been sold there in the year to date.
