Yangquan, Shanxi – State-owned Yangquan Coal Industry Group started up its 200kT/year ethylene glycol project in Yangquan, Shanxi in later April after a successful trial run.
Located in the Longchuan Industrial Park in the city’s Pingding county, the new facility broke ground in September 2014 and is the first phase of the group’s 400kT/year EG plant with CNY 6.5bn ($941m) total investment earmarked.
Phase One is expected to generate CNY 1bn annual sales. Phase Two is scheduled to begin construction later this year or early next year, a department director of the company told UTECH-polyurethane.com. The director declined to be identified.
The plant licenses syngas to EG technology from Shanghai Pujing Chemical Industry, a subsidiary of China National Machinery Industry Corporation.
The EG factory is the first project of Shanxi’s plan to build a 1mT/year EG cluster in the province. “China’s EG sector will grow fast over the next few years, with a number of projects planned by the Development and Reform Commission under the 13th Five Year Plan to transform coal from a mere energy resource to chemical feedstock,” said the director.
Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) has roughly 1MT/year EG facilities on stream or under construction in north China.
