By Liz White, editorOrlando, Florida - Yantai Wanhua Polyurethanes Co. Ltd is to raise capacity for MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) at its Yantai, China, plant to 200 kilotonnes per annum and at its Ningbo, China, plant to 300 ktpa, by 2008, according to chairman Jiangsheng Ding. The next step will see the Chinese MDI maker start, within 2007, to build a new integrated 300 ktpa plant at the Ningbo site. This fully integrated unit is scheduled to be on stream by 2010, and still leaves room for further development at Ningbo, said Ding, speaking during the Polyurethanes 2007 conference of the US Centre for the Polyurethanes Industry, held in conjunction with the UTECH North America 2007 exhibition, in Orlando.Yantai claims its new, "more environmentally friendly" MDI technology allows it to expand "with little investment." When the new 300 ktpa plant is completed, Ding indicated, Yantai Wanhua's Ningbo site will be "the largest MDI manufacturing base in the world."Ding also commented that the company is "considering non-domestic capital investment to support and supply" overseas regions, as well as strengthening its growth plans. The added capacity will be used to meet rapid growth in Chinese MDI demand and demand from other regions, the company's 24 Sept announcement said. Yantai Wanhua currently sells 20 percent of its MDI in markets outside China, the company commented."
