Newton Aycliffe, UK -- A contract to manufacture pipeline pigs for the maintenance of a 1,100-mile (1,770km) long natural gas pipeline from Azerbaijan to Europe was won by IK-UK.
The Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline will open with a 16bn m3 capacity and run through Georgia and Turkey to Italy.
IK-UK – part of the Norway-based IK Group – won the contract to produce 46 pigs measuring nearly 1.5m in diameter.
The project has a 100-tonne polyurethane requirement in all, shipped to the County Durham facility weekly in 10 tonne batches, according to the company.
According to IK UK: “A significant number of different configurations were designed and produced within four weeks.”
Construction of the pipeline began formally in March 2015 and is expected to be completed in 2018.
